An iron is a type of appliance comprising a flat metal base that is used to smooth out the cloth?s wrinkles, when heat is applied. It is basically pressed on the clothes to remove wrinkles from washed clothes and works by loosening the bonds present in the long-chain polymer molecules in the fibres of the material. The fibres are straightened by the weight of the iron, and when the molecules are heated up and they hold their new form as they cool down.

Irons have long been in existence. One of the oldest forms of irons were sadirons or sad irons, commonly known as flat irons. Later, a modified version of flat irons called charcoal irons was developed. This type of iron machine saves electric power and is still found to be used by certain laundrymen. However, now-a-days, electric irons are commonly found to be used instead of the old charcoal and flat irons. The electric irons comprise of hot plates made from aluminium or stainless steel, which uses resistive heating from an electric current to smoothen the cloth. The heating temperature of the hot plates is controlled with the help of a thermostat which switches the current on and off, thus, maintaining the selected level of temperature.
